Dragons[]
When the dragons came, Kaernest died and the long winter came with them.
In this setting, "dragon" refers to very intelligent, powerful, lizard-like beasts. This isn't much different from other settings, but the subcategories of dragons become more important. Each is technically a sub category of the former. In some ways, these subcategories help better define the larger category(s).
Wyrms[]
Wyrms are dragons that have progressed beyond just physical prowess, they have also begun to learn magic, whether it be dragon magic, or learning the magic of the species of Kaernest. This is the "hard rule" to progress from "dragon" to "wyrm". This has never been seen to happen in any dragon less than 200 years old. That is not a hard rule.
The blood of wyrms is known to have magically ability in its own. Its not known for certain if it is a change in their blood that allows wyrms to learn magic, or if it's the act of learning magic that causes their blood to become magical. Drinking the blood of a wyrm can cause somewhat extreme changes in a being. It almost seems to grant some of the power of the wyrm to pass onto the being. Its also dangerous to drink the blood of a wyrm, as the changes it causes can be too much for some individuals. It's also against the Mortal Laws to drink (or even possess) the blood of a wyrm.
Great Wyrms[]
Where a wyrm is a step forward in the "evolution" of a dragon, a great wyrm is another step forward. The great wyrms go beyond capability with magic, and most would say they have mastered at least some form of magic. Dragons who progress this far are typically no less than 400 years old, but again, this is not a hard and fast rule.
Great Eight[]
Each of the benevolent (common) species has a great wyrm that rules over them. As there are 7 of these species, it should be no surprise that there are 7 great dragons that stand out. The eighth great wyrm represents no species, in fact his goal is to wipe all life from the world, so he can claim everything as his own.
The Great Eight are considered gods by their followers. They are the source of divine spells.
